It is a pleasure for me to edit this book on osteotomy. I would like to thank all of the authors for their contributions, Ana Skalamera for her help in assisting me in editing this book and my secretary Cathy Smith.
Osteotomy is an ancient surgical skill recognized for centuries as a surgical technique that could address deformity thereby improving function or appearance.
In this text we have attempted to demonstrate various osteotomy techniques for correction of deformity, closure of bone defects, preservation of joint function and improved cosmesis.
The techniques presented have in common the need for appropriate imaging – if necessary three-dimensional imaging – as well as carefully thought out and executed surgical plan. Pre-operative planning is essential in the performance of osteotomy and the chapters in this book clearly outline the need for careful physical examination and imaging prior to the procedure.
The ubiquitous nature of joint replacement surgery has eclipsed osteotomy as the common tool for management of lower limb arthritis but increasingly it is apparent that in the younger patient population carefully planned and executed osteotomy can preserve the patient’s own joint and avoid the need for joint replacement surgery for years or even decades. It’s a pleasure for me to be associated with a book that reaffirms the importance of this recently neglected surgical technique and I am proud to have been asked to perform the role of Editor.
I hope you enjoy the book and you find it of benefit to you in your work.
